wheelhouse
It’s not just that we’re the largest structural engineering firm in the region.
It’s our skill at blending budget, buildability, and design to deliver integrity of architectural vision and integrity of structure.
We’re learners—constantly pushing our own boundaries personally and professionally. We’ve even created LM University to push an always-learning culture. I mean, how many places does the CEO take you sky diving? Our comfort zone is outside the comfort zone.
Our vision is a radically inspiring platform where everyone is galvanized to take control of who they truly are. Doesn’t sound like a typically engineering firm, right?
In our mission to build people to build better we lean into six core values:
- Curiosity driven growth.
- Challenge the status quo.
- Diversity of thought.
- Deliver results together.
- Engage in the fun.
- Embrace our community.
These aren’t just internal mantras either. When you work with Lynch Mykins you’ll find our collaborative teamwork, thoughtful questions, quick laughs, and a focus on delivering results beginning with your first interaction.
We’re not a firm, we’re a family. And while structural engineering is serious, we make everything fun.
Structural Engineers
We’re artists—sculpting with steel, concrete, deep foundations—actually, every conceivable structural system! Our focus is delivering each project on time and on budget, ensuring the entire design team gets exactly what they need. Creative solutions for buildable designs. From the owner’s vision to the architect’s sketch, to the stamped drawings, we’ve got what it takes to deliver.
During construction, we’re with you every step of the way. And we know things can go awry, despite the best planning. So, if the proverbial shit hits the fan, we’ll be there in a flash.
Special Inspections
Because we’re on-the-ground and in-the-know from day 1, we provide Special Inspections (SI) on nearly all our construction projects—in addition to performing them for owners on other projects. Having your SI team working tightly (as in the desk across from you) to the structural engineers maximizes efficiency and effectiveness. Our dedicated construction technicians are well-trained in materials, testing, and to catch potential errors before they impact the project’s timeline or budget. In fact, half our team is certified in master inspections—and there are only 10 in the whole state of NC!
All aspects of construction get checked—and then checked again for quality control! And if discrepancies arise, we can address them in real-time to keep things on track. This boots on the ground mentality helps deliver on-time, and on-budget projects that the whole team is proud of.

- On-site crushed recycled concrete for aggregate
- Recycled steel
- Wood products from sustainably managed forests
- Locally available materials
Adaptive Reuse
Adaptive reuse is now business-as-usual as shopping malls become corporate headquarters, warehouses become dynamic event spaces and multi-tenant offices, shipping containers become retail and restaurant spaces, and much more.
Evaluating, reinforcing, and reimagining structures for new life gets our energy pumping. We’ll work to preserve the good while delivering the modern amenities of the 21st century.
Structural Investigation
Let us be the Holmes to your Watson! The ability to see a structure from both the macro and micro perspective is what makes LM Structural Investigations successful. From field surveys, material testing, detailed analysis and more, we provide a deeper look into the structure. We’ll present the facts and our expert opinions. You won’t find us sugar-coating things, nor will we over-play concerns. And of course, we’ll offer detailed recommendations for the path forward. Some types of Structural Investigation we do includes:
- Survey and reports for clients purchasing existing buildings
- Investigation of corrosion or other damage of reinforced concrete, steel-framed and wood-framed structures
- Investigation of possible structural distress observed by occupants
- Survey and investigation of buildings damaged by foundation differential settlement, expansive soils and other types of ground movements
- Survey and investigation of structures with hurricane, fire or flood damage
- Evaluation of seismic and wind loads
Our vast experience in LEED building certification now extends to WELL Building Standards, Green Building Initiative, and more. So bring your dreams of reclaimed timber, on-site water recapture, rooftop wind turbines, or anything else!

Peer Review
We’re never short on opinions–professional opinions that is. We’ve build a reputation over the last 50 years for being trustworthy structural experts. And it’s why owners frequently select LM to conduct peer reviews of recently designed or completed structures. We’ll review the structural designs for conceptual correctness and to ensure it’s free of major errors or omissions.
Forensic Engineering
When a structure fails, determining what went wrong can feel like a jigsaw puzzle (with a million pieces). It takes keen judgment and extensive experience to determine the cause of a structural failure. Our investigators will assess the root cause and contributing factors to help the client move forward.
As experts in the standards of practice, as well as in regulations affecting the industry, our team is well prepared to offer unbiased and thoughtful advice. When needed, we can also provide expert witness testimony.
