UNC Rex Outpatient Cancer Center

The project delivered a new free-standing 125,000 SF comprehensive outpatient cancer center across from the existing main UNC Rex Healthcare campus in Raleigh. Designed to serve patients today and to flex as cancer treatments continue to evolve, a patient-centered design approach ensured graceful flows for both patients and staff.

This patient and community-centered facility includes: medical oncology (55 infusion bays and 39 exam rooms), oncology pharmacy, laboratory, radiation oncology (3 linear accelerator vaults with potential for 2 in the future, 1 HDR, CT simulator, and 8 exam rooms), a special Quality of Life Clinic that includes body therapy, group consult, and other specialized therapeutic services, and support functions (administration, research, patient education, patient care navigation, conference and community spaces, meditation, tumor conference, healing garden).

A cantilevered canopy in the front of the building creates a gracious entrance and the building is constructed with a structural steel floor and roof system and metal stud exterior walls. The five-story, 500-space pre-cast concrete parking deck offers ample space for staff, patients and visitors.

The project won a 2023 Triangle Business Journal Space Award for Top State/County/Municipal Project and was a Healthcare Design Showcase finalist.
