Who hung the moon? We did! This unique art installation by UK artist Luke Jerram suspended a 23-foot diameter, internally lit replica of the moon on the Old Dominion University campus between the Barry Art Museum and the Convocation Center. On a world tour, this luminescent sculpture has been experienced by over 10 million viewers in 30 countries.
With high-resolution NASA imagery printed on the surface, viewers of the “Museum of the Moon” exhibit explored lunar details like craters and valleys at a 1:500,000 scale. The suspended moon, in the dimly lit space, immerses visitors in a thought-provoking and serene atmosphere to encourage a deeper appreciation for our lunar neighbor. The exhibit often includes surround-sound musical accompaniments and scientific talks to further enrich the experience.
