Hearth: Memorial to the Enslaved, The College of William and Mary

This 50 foot long by 20 foot wide by 20 foot high serves as a memorial to the African American workers who were once enslaved on the campus of the College of William & Mary. An international design competition garnered more than 80 submissions. The resulting memorial design evokes a hearth and consists of multiple asymmetrical curves. It is entirely clad in brick and prominently displays plaques with the names of the known 60 enslaved people. Additional names will be added as research continues.

The unusual geometry required a non-traditional analysis approach and dictated the use of concrete for the structural system.
