The original Crossroads Elementary School was built as World War II was ending. Beyond repair, a new, 147,000 SF, 3-story school for students K-8 was brought to life. The sustainable building was Norfolk Public School’s first LEED certified school (and it achieved LEED Gold)! It includes a community center and is also designed as a hurricane shelter.
Some of the green aspects include: rooftop plantings that capture rainwater, “green” dashboard that displays energy consumption moment to moment, underground 48-inch diameter pipes store rainwater from the school to water athletic fields, permeable composite paving allows rain to percolate through the surface rather than create runoff, 95% of the site’s construction debris was shipped out for recycling, Low-E glass (which reduces heat transfer), a solar hot water system, a bio-based flooring alternative to vinyl tiles, wind turbines and photovoltaic cells to power exterior lights, and low-flow plumbing fixtures.
