Broughton Hospital

Broughton Hospital is a 4-story, 479,000 SF healthcare facility focused on the care of patients requiring mental health treatment in the western portion of North Carolina. The new hospital replaced a campus of existing buildings constructed between the late 1880s and the early 1960s that were obsolete and could not be adapted to meet current building codes or the needs of NC Department of Health and Human Services. Serving NC’s 37 westernmost counties the new facility provides 382 beds for acute, geriatric, medical, adolescent, forensic, and long-term mental health patients.

The project included concrete masonry bearing walls, pre-cast hollow-core floor planks in patient care units, a structural steel central circulation spine, and several treatment malls. The building was constructed on a steeply sloping site.

The new hospital features a state-of-the-art laboratory, pharmacy, dental and radiology departments along with courtyards and a treatment mall. Patients now receive consolidated care in a single location with natural lighting and unique features like a living skills kitchen. The project also includes a central utility plant and landscape building.
