This project, located at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington DC, was designed to provide treatment to wounded veterans. It included a new 1,500 SF steel-framed conference room on the roof of the existing three-story, cast-in-place concrete structure, stairs and elevators to the new space, and other third floor renovations. Challenges included new openings in the existing concrete structure and demonstrating that existing structure was adequate to support the new gravity and lateral loads. A simple, lightweight structural system was chosen to ensure that the existing building would not need reinforcing.
