This comprehensive renovation should have taken 18 months, but the team did it in just 9. Virtually all of the original stadium was demolished to deliver new amenities and modern seating (600,000 lb of demolished materials to be precise).
A tight, 9-month window was opened to complete all the renovations in time for the opening game of the 2019- 2020 season. The new seating brings fans closer to the action and ensures much improved comfort with more leg room. New concession stands and restrooms, new entrance gates, new audio and video equipment and a new press box are also part of the improved stadium. The stadium now seats 22,480 fans–nearly 3,000 more than the original stadium. LEED Certification was earned in 2020 with sustainability features that include parking for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, exterior lighting designed to reduce light pollution and non-potable water used for irrigation. Water efficiency measures are estimated to conserve 35,000 gallons per year, equivalent to 37% in savings, in addition to energy efficiency features projected to reduce energy use by 18%.
The project was also the winner of the Virginia Community Leader Awards “Rise to the Challenge award” from the USGBC for exceptional green building that overcame significant obstacles.
