Has the overall responsibility for the operations of the Office to which they are assigned, including, but not limited to, the management, supervision, and training of all staff in the office. Manages the office to assure proper staffing and equitable distribution of the workload. 

Typical Duties: 

The following duties are typical of the position, but are not all encompassing. 

-Ensures adequate staff exists for current and projected work in the Office. Includes authority to hire and fire personnel as necessary, in consultation with the Integrator. 

-Oversees and is responsible for the direct marketing and business development efforts of the Office 

-Responsible for some aspects of the financial performance of the Office 

-Serves as the local Human Resources Officer for the Office 

-Ensures that staff members are adequately trained for the responsibilities of their positions 

-Responsible for the Quality Control of all work in the Office. 

-Prioritizes the workflow and adjusts staffing as required to meet established schedules and unexpected deadlines 

-Coordinates staffing assignments with other Managing Directors for work shared between offices 

-Responsible for assignment of mentors for new engineering staff and for oversight of the mentoring program 

-Participates in performance reviews for staff 

-Identifies “experts” within the office to be responsible for staying current with their topic of specialty. Assists the “expert” in pursuing membership in the appropriate committees and associations outside of the office and ensures that they avidly read newly published codes, journals and periodicals relating to their topic. Reviews and approves periodic reports from “experts” relating to design and engineering issues 

-Selects participants for outside training and seminars 

-Reports to the Integrator 

Limits of Authority: 

Has complete authority to make decisions regarding technical issues, personnel, and quality control matters on a day to day basis in the Office. Decisions and actions shall be guided by and in concert with the Company Employee Handbook, direction from the President and Board of Directors and the strategic plan of the company. 

Specific Goals 

-Ensure that the Office achieves the established annual billing goal 

-Manages staff to ensure established utilization rates are maintained for staff 

-Works to achieve goals for realization Ratios for office overall 

-Manages Accounts Receivable to hit targets for A/R per employee 

-Promotes corporate values and culture 

Candidate Requirements

Has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering (structures option), and usually has a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering or Engineering Management and is currently registered in one or more states. Has 10+ years’ experience in structural engineering, 5 or more in a leadership position. Has received formal training in leadership development, strategic planning, financial management, human resources, marketing, business development, risk management, and project scheduling.
